Food Autonomy Festival Amsterdam

What is FAF all about?

The Food Autonomy Festival (FAF), Amsterdam, is about presenting and celebrating solutions to the food system crisis, the climate crisis, and an alternative to capitalist, hierarchical organisation, that has undeniably failed to deliver an ecologically sustainable and just world.

Autonomy, as we understand it, is the act of individuals determining for themselves the course of their existence in the context of self-organised communities. It is about breaking our dependency on an unjust system and fighting for a better one. We want to see autonomous, self-organised groups take back the fields, forests, streets, farms and factories. We want to see communities organised in a cooperative way in harmony with their neighbours and surrounding ecologies.

For this to happen, food is a good place to start. This is why the decentralisation and socialisation of food production is the focus of FAF.

Thankfully, there are groups and individuals in Amsterdam and beyond broadly working towards food autonomy in various ways, though their politics may differ. We want to bring together, celebrate, and learn from these initiatives as part of an important step in collectively reclaiming our autonomy and putting food at the heart of questions over social, economic, political, and climate justice.

So come join us to learn practical skills, to hear from others about their experiences with food autonomy, and to share in the collective enthusiasm for an autonomous future!

The Programme

The full programme is not yet confirmed, but the festival will combine practical workshops in growing food, composting, creating food forests and more, along with presentations from people working the land autonomously and discussions about food sovereignty, agroecology, self-organisation, food aid and the migrant crisis and more. Two meals will be served throughout the day, both will be vegan, which is good for animals and for the planet! Both meals will be served on donation, with the money going to support the Balkans Aid Delivery Mission to provide hot meals to refugees.

Confirmed:

Food aid and the Migrant Crisis – Panel discussion

Land-based Collectives – Presentation and discussion

Food Sovereignty and Agroecology – Presentation and discussion

Seedling Exchange – If you’ve got extra, bring seeds and seedlings to share with others at our Seed Exchange stand.
