The Immokalee workers won from Ahold!

2014-CIW-bij-ahold-groep-voor-parkeergarage640After years of campaigning and actions the Supermarket Holding Ahold finally changed it’s policy in the US: the company signed the Fair Food Programme in Florida. The result of this is that tomato pickers, who also harvest for Aholds supermarket chains in the US, will get paid a bit better from now on.

As part of the campaign of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) there have been several action in Amsterdam at the annual shareholders meeting of Ahold. Two times also ASEED was part of those picketlines. The CIW was today thanking the activists in the Netherlands joining those solidarity action. But the tomato pickers themselves did by far the most in this struggle!

2014-CIW-bij-ahold-CIWgroup-350The CIW has already for over 20 years been fighting for higher wages, better working conditions for the tomato pickers and against sexual abuse and slavery on the fields. Corporations like Walmart, McDonalds and Burger King, who are not known for their social behaviour, already changed their minds and signed the binding Fair Food code of conduct. And now, finally Ahold as well! Hopefully this decision will inspire the last supermarket chains to sign Fair Food Program as well.
