On Thursday August 15 there is an open day for the two potato breeding projects of the University of Wageningen, WUR. These are the projects DuRPh, Sustainable Resistance against Phytopthora, and Bioimpuls. Both projects have the goal to breed potatoes that are resistant against late blight, or Phytopthora. Bioimpuls is working with classical breeding and the DuRPh project is using genetic modification. See for the program of the day http://www.wageningenur.nl/nl/show/Publieksdag-DuRPh-en-BioImpuls.htm.

There will be two session, one in the afternoon from 13:00-15:00 and one from 19:00-21:00. In the program there is space for ‘interaction with the public’. The DuRPh-team has convinced the Dutch government that their DurPh potatoes are the only ones that can establish long term, durable resistance against late blight. Also, the team is saying that, because the potatoes only have genes in them from the same species, they are very similar to potatoes that are classically bred and therefore should be exempted from the current GMO regulations. [1] This would mean that there would be no safety testing for these new crops and they would not have to be labelled. But there is no consensus about the safety of these kinds of GMOs. [2] To be able to ask critical questions about the DuRPh project ASEED would like to have a critical audience present during the sessions, especially in the afternoon.

In order to give people the opportunity to do this ASEED organises two information evenings with experts who will share their knowledge and insights about the DuRPh project. We invite you to come to one of these evenings to get informed and also to share your own ideas about this project!
