Over babymelk en voedselsoevereiniteit

 

Het lijken absurde krantenkoppen de laatste dagen: ‘Chinezen kopen Nederlandse schappen flesvoeding leeg’ en ‘Snel spoedoverleg over tekort babymelkpoeder’. Vanwege schandalen met giftige babyvoeding hebben bezorgde ouders in China nu flink wat geld over voor melkpoeder uit Nederland. Waarschijnlijk zal er de komende maanden hier geen enkele baby ondervoed raken door dit gebrek aan melkpoeder. Maar toch is dit een serieuze waarschuwing voor wat er mis is met ons voedselsysteem. Al decennia kopen westerse landen voedsel op in andere delen van de wereld. Soms verdienen de boeren daar wat aan, maar vaak profiteert vooral de lokale elite en heeft een groot deel van de bevolking er geen baat bij. Kleine producenten van voedsel voor de lokale markt worden verdreven van hun grond en door de export blijft er minder gezond voedsel over voor de lokale bevolking. Door de steeds ‘vrijere’ wereldmarkt wordt voedsel steeds meer rondgezeuld.

Food is hot. More and more people want to know where their food is coming from and how it is produced. Small-scale initiatives to grow or distribute your own food are gaining popularity. In other words: it it time for food sovereignty, also in the Netherlands.

 

ASEED has recently published a brochure about food sovereignty. This brochure explains what is wrong with the current agriculture and food system and presents food sovereignty as an alternative. It also contains concrete examples of how you can strive towards food sovereignty in the Netherlands yourself.

Book: Legal! Optimisme – realiteit – hoop

2012-soy-legalThe Flemish organisation for a justice and responsible agriculture Wervel has published the book ‘Legal!’. The book links our European consumption pattern with the destructions on the other side of the ocean. It contains many examples of greenwashing in Brazil and in Europe.

The autor Luc Vankrunkelsven is already or many years living half of the time in Brazil and he has always been following the soy expansion from close by.
