Hundreds of stickers with the message “I don’t eat GM chips” have been spread throughout The Netherlands between September 29 and October 7. The sticker action week against GM potatoes took place parallel to the annual Week of Taste, which’ central theme this year was the potato. Concerned citizens and activists put the protest stickers on landposts and such in the vicinities of snackbars, supermarkets, trial fields with genetically modified potatoes. Even the WUR agriculture university in Wageningen was not spared. Apparently the GE projects of BASF and WUR leave not only us with sour taste and many do not hide their resentment. But unfortunately the message has not came across well yet, as the most recent permit for even more BASF field trials for 2013 illustrate. So GM protests go on and we call everybody to join our sticker and protest card action “GM chips won’t touch my lips”. Continue reading to find out how, and where.

One of the types of genetically manipulated maize being grown in Europe os so-called BT maize. This is also the type of GM maize being used in the Dutch coexistence experiment in 2006-2007. Greenpeace has recently published a briefing on all the arguments for stopping this crop.

In mei publiceerde Bureau GGO weer de veldproeven met genetisch gemanipuleerde gewassen op haar website. BASF Crop Science heeft drie proefvelden met de consumptiegentechaardappel Fortuna, de Wageningse landbouwuniversiteit WUR doet proeven met de DuRPh-aardappel in 4 gemeenten. Ook test WUR een aantal gentechappelbomen in de open lucht in Wageningen. Zetmeelcooperatie AVEBE doet dit jaar voor het eerst sinds lange tijd geen gentechveldproeven. Bezwaren van ruim 100 burgers en enkele stichtingen tegen een van de vergunningen werden onlangs door de Raad van State naar de prullenbak verwezen omdat de Raad alle bezwaarden niet ontvankelijk verklaarde. ASEED stelde een dossier samen met gedetailleerde informatie over de proefvelden dit jaar.

On May 17 2010 about 40 persons of the action group 'Roundup Monsanto' blocked both gates of the Monsanto seed company in Bergschenhoek (near Rotterdam). 'Roundup Monsanto' wants Monsanto to back out of the seed market, and demand an end to patents on seeds and living organisms. Monsanto and other agro-chemical multinationals are lobbying the Dutch government and the EU for legislative changes that would make it easier for large companies to take control of the seed market and food production.[1] The blockade took place at the former De Ruiter Seeds, acquired by Monsanto in 2008, where research laboratories, offices, greenhouses, and a central storage for seeds and seedlings are to be found.… verder lezen
