ASEED at the Degrowth Conference: Land Struggles and Alternatives in a Degrowth Society

August 24, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Interactive discussion (online) co-organized by ASEED, TNI, Voedsel Anders & Toekoemstboeren

Image Artist: Federico Boyd Sulapas Dominguez

In this session we will explore the question of access to land, land struggles, and alternatives to growth-driven land approaches from different perspectives including farmers, activists, and researchers. We hope to engage in an interactive discussion together with speakers and participants that will advance our understanding of land in the context of degrowth and sustainable food systems. We aim to bring diverse perspectives on land to an audience who may be new to questions of land politics and land struggles. The presentations by the different speakers will, firstly,  advance our understanding of some of the important obstacles to access to land, or drivers of unjust land distribution today and how these are linked to growth-driven economics and manifest in practice. Secondly, we will learn about alternatives to market-based, financialized, or capitalist visions of the management of land, such as commoning practices as contributors to degrowth. In between the presentations we invite all participants to reflect and discuss together their perspectives on how growth-based society impacts land around them as well as exchanging experiences and ideas of degrowth alternative approaches to land.
