SUNDAY 18th: Program Descriptions

Communal breakfast: poems & questions

10.00-11.00 @Main hall or field

10am may be early on a Sunday, but there will be lots of porridge, poems, and coffee.

Food Autonomy Lino Art

11.00-12.30 @Mirror Room

In this lino workshop, Sophia and Elfi will use the medium of lino cut printing to facilitate reflection on food autonomy and food justice! We will start with a discussion about what these ideas mean to us, and create designs that we will then carve out of lino blocks. The meditative process of carving will give us some time to reflect and get to know each other. Thinking about how to transfer your design to print also will give you a new way of thinking about your ideas, by deciding which parts to carve away and which parts should remain. We will then combine our designs to make a collaborative food autonomy poster that everyone can take home with them! There is a maximum capacity of 15 participants for the workshop.

CULTIVATE New (Food) Metaphors

11.00-12.30 @Yellow Room

CULTIVATE team from Wageningen University invites you to think along on what are the ingredients and flavors of food sharing in an autonomous food system?. To get our mental juices flowing we will take existing food-sharing concepts and cook up metaphors and narratives for a future of food autonomy. It’s going to be all fun and (serious) games!

In a 1,5 h session we will work with food-sharing concepts and combine them with game elements from the New Metaphors Game, designed by Imaginaries Lab. The aim is to come together, debate, and co-create new narratives around food sharing. By the end of the session, we hope to have a grand collective mind-map that captures our visions and narratives.

With the aim of contributing to resilient and healthy urban and peri-urban (UPU) food systems, CULTIVATE (Co-designing food-sharing innovation for resilience)  uses a multi-actor approach to develop the Food Sharing Compass, a comprehensive social innovation online platform providing tools for change-makes, food-sharing initiatives, and citizens to engage in sustainable and just food provisioning practices and collaborate to build capacity for food sharing at the city level and beyond.

Reading Circle on Chiquita Bananas

12.30-14.00 @Mirror Room

This workshop aims to critically examine the dark history behind the Chiquita’s bananas. A household name, known and sold all around the world, in stores such as Albert Heijn and Jumbo. Through this session we will collectively engage with a range of different sources including artworks, poetry and various literature, to discuss the colonial past and present of Chiquita, formerly known as United Fruit Company. The session will be facilitated in English, but there will also be texts in Spanish. There will be a limited number of participants for this session and will be organised based on arrival time to the session.

Practical session: Growing oyster mushrooms on coffee grounds

12.30-14.00 @Yellow Room

We will learn about what mushrooms are and what they need to grow big and juicy! The workshop will be hands-on style. After a short introduction we will make our own mushroom starter kits while your host answers (hopefully) all your questions. Did you know that there is a way to grow oyster mushrooms in only 3 weeks? Come and make it happen with us!

Talk: the colonial legacy of global food systems

15.30-16.30 @Mirror Room

Celebrating 30 years of peasant struggle: La Via Campesina

15.00-16.30 @Yellow Room

In this session, Edu from Toekomstboeren, the Dutch member organisation of La Via Campesina (https://toekomstboeren.nl/over/), will reflect on the recent 30th anniversary of the global peasant movement La Via Campesina. As the movement writes on their webpage: “This celebration is a reflection of three decades of commitment to the realization of social justice, human dignity and food sovereignty through peasant agroecology, popular feminism and peasant rights”. Join this session if you want to learn more about La Via Campesina, and want to discuss and reflect on the lessons learned from 30 years of collective struggle.

Roundtable discussion: pathways to becoming a landworker

17.00-18.30 @Mirror Room

In this session, we are going to have a Q&A about pathways to becoming a farmer/vegetable grower, touching both on different ways in which one can learn farming skills (such as formal trainings, learning as a volunteer, etc.), on ways in which one can enter farming (start working on farms or vegetable gardens) and on the different barriers and difficulties connected to these journeys. Guided by the questions and curiosities of the audience of the discussion, Mette (student at the biodynamic farming school Warmondehof), Vincent (farmer at the CSA Tuin Kansrijk) and Edu (farmer at the CSA Pluk!) will share their personal experiences, reflections and suggestions.

Poetry/embodiment workshop on food autonomy and extractivist agriculture

17.00-18.30 @Yellow Room

Invitation from the workshop host Julia: Humans are storytelling animals. The narratives we have in our heads shape the way we are and the ways in which we interact with the world around us. I have grown tired of the mainstream stories of human dominance over nature and our right to all its, as we like to call them, resources. Mueller (2017) and Abram (1996) argued that senses and bodily experiences could open space for us to learn “other-than-human sensibilities” and favour more integrity with the surrounding world. This integrity invites a non-exploitative relationship with one another and puts limits on our economy to create space for the well-being of all. I would like to invite you to together with me play with embodiment, our sensitivities and knowledges marginalised by the societal norms and explore loving and respectful ways of living in our environment. Drawing on the practice of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen – a movement artist, researcher, educator and therapist, we will play with words, movement and sounds and collectively create a (not-a-)poem about our bodily experiences of our environment. If you decide to join me, I would like to ask you to come as feeling-thinking flesh in the rawest form you can afford.

Workshop with clay about animal poops

17.00-18.30 @Crafting Corner

We will learn something about poops of wild dutch animals in a fun, creative and social way. This workshop is all about the question ‘why does this poop look the way it looks?’. There is a lot we don’t know to be able to fully answer that question, but we’ll investigate a few aspects – with some information I will provide, with each other, with our own understanding, and with clay. Inspired by Wilderness Awareness teaching! This workshop is made for adults (people 14+), but everyone age 10+ can join accompanied by an adult (if you are under 14 and want to join by yourself, you can come ask me and I’ll give you an example of what I like you to understand to be able to join).

Collective music : jam session, bring your own instrument!

20.00-21.00 @the field

At the end of the day and after the workshops, we will close the day with a jam session and collective music. We have space outside to set up the jam session, as well as inside an area to play music through speakers next to the fire. We hope this evening session brings people together to share, connect and enjoy time together to close off the festival. Please feel free to bring any instruments to join in this collective music making!

ALL DAY PROGRAM:

Crafting & Arts for people of all ages

ALL DAY @crafting corner

In this all day activity, we have set up a space for crafting and art to reflect on food autonomy. This space hopes to bring together people of all ages to reflect on what food means to them, how they relate to it and what they find important. Through painting, crafting and writing down thoughts and feelings in one place, we hope this offers a space of calm and creativity for everyone.

Reading Children’s Books

ALL DAY @location tba

We have a selection of children’s picture books which touch on different social and environmental justice issues through their images and stories (the books available are in Dutch, Arabic, Spanish and English). We hope children can feel part of the festival and have different things to engage with and enjoy. If there is interest from children and parents, we will also do different moments of reading together during the day, so children can come together to hear a reading of a story (this will be offered in Dutch and English). The books can be found in the children’s corner, alongside a selection of different toys and games.

Lunch & Dinner: by Taste Before You Waste Utrecht

13.30 and 18.30 @tba

Taste Before You Waste Utrecht is a radical, independent and horizontally lead initiative which aims to raise awareness about the problem of food waste at production and consumer levels, and actively work on reducing waste on a local level. This is threefold:

– We do regular pickups at small greengrocers we have an agreement with and give this to a shelter for undocumented people and the Free Shop.

– We collect food that would have otherwise gone to waste, and together with anyone who wants to joinwe cook donation based delicious meals every Saturday in ACU

– We have free food markets, and cook at different events and demonstrations with a sustainable, activist, DIY culture.

With our public dinners, we bring people together by cooking and sharing a meal every week where we try to break the dichotomy of volunteers and guests: anyone can help cooking, cleaning, serving or get involved differently. We don’t just cook for people but rather, we are all part of a community trying to contribute in the best way we can.

See you there!
